Short answer: Yes. NJ Transit’s Reduced Fare Program gives eligible military personnel, their dependents, and veterans with service-connected disabilities 50% off a regular one-way fare on buses, trains, and light rail, available year-round.
Who qualifies
- Active duty service members
- Reserve and National Guard members
- Those with official “Retired” status from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard
- Military dependents (with a valid dependent ID card)
- Veterans with service-connected disabilities (VA card must indicate “service connected”)
You do not need to be a New Jersey resident to use this program.
What you get
50% off (or more) a regular one-way fare. The catch: the discount applies to the one-way reduced fare option, not every ticket type, and you must carry your valid ID every trip. IDs are checked on board, so a discounted fare without ID does not count.
How to claim it
- Buy through the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App (MyTix) or a ticket vending machine and select Senior/Disabled to get the reduced fare. You can also buy at a station ticket office.
- Carry your valid military ID, military-dependent ID, or VA card (marked “service connected”) and show it to the operator, conductor, or ticket inspector when asked.
- Questions on eligibility can go to the NJ Transit Reduced Fare program office.
