As shown. See all photos. My maternal grandmother Eleanor Madden (nee Keith) (1913–1996) sailing with my grandfather (the photographer here) on Labor Day weekend 1944. It makes sense that my grandfather would be back by September, as my entire childhood he obsessed about how he wished he’d been able to join his comrades at the Battle of the Bulge (began December 1944). It seemed to haunt him to not be sent to the frontlines. If I remember correctly it’s because he had the rarest blood type. He was also terribly intelligent so that may have been part of it. But what do I know? My mom came along two years later. Not sure where. Lake Michigan?
